WHAT'S THE PROPER WAY TO ACT WHILE COURT IS IN SESSION?
- Proper courtroom decorum is based on showing respect for our laws and our court.. We also expect you to behave in a way that does not distract from the court proceedings.
- Spectators must be quiet while court is in session. That means you cannot talk, whisper, giggle or laugh.
- You may not eat, drink or chew gum in the courtroom.
- All electronic devices must be turned off.
- Spectators, witnesses, plaintiffs and defendants may not read while the court is in session.
- There is no smoking inside City Hall, including in the courtroom.
- Do not go in and out of the courtroom while court is in session, even while waiting for your case to be heard.
- If you are a witness, defendant or plaintiff, only speak when you are called to the stand or questioned by the Judge. When you do speak, speak clearly and loudly enough to be heard. Stay calm; be respectful of the attorneys and other court officials who may ask you questions. Be attentive and responsive. Listen carefully to any instructions from the Judge or other court officials.
- Call the Judge "Your Honor" or "Judge" to show respect for his office.
- Do not interrupt the Judge, attorneys or other parties in your case.
- Can I use my cell phone or listen to music while in the courtroom? Cellphones are not allowed in the courtroom
